"The teacher wasn't actually a bad teacher, just the class was misbehavinged."
"You know how I'm a barefoot walker?"
"I look like Santy because I have the same initials. I'm twins with Santa."
"Sometimes I like to see the smell, you know?"
"I wish my hair sticked up. If it was as long as Rapunzel's and it sticked up it could hit the ceiling!"
"I was such a grubber when I was a baby."
"I like to really mess up my hair."

Sasha Says, ep. 22
"I saw a honeybee with its pockets full of pollen."
Sasha referred to her mom's stainless steel to-go coffee mug, which Sasha was using for a smoothie, as a "metal water bottle"
On the (humid) weather: "It's really sweaty today."
While playing: "Even dinosaur friends eat each other." And, shortly thereafter: "Now you're a t-rex zombie!"
Sasha was pretending her dog was a horse she was training, but felt she needed more dogs (to be more horses). I suggested she be a dog, and she said with a tone of great incredulity, "Me, be a dog? I'd rather be a high-ho farmer" -- without a shred of irony.
As an airplane rumbles by outside: "Shut up, cloud!"

Sasha Says, ep. 21
"Pretty much everyone in my family is a vampire zombie by now."
"My mom is a cleaner-beaner. I don't really know what that means."
"Art is French." (it turns out she was making a generalization based on the beret-wearing artist trope)
"I'm too old for regular parks, I just like amusement parks now."
And a mini edition of Jaden Says (I'm babysitting him once a week now):
"I wished for love and I got a mermaid!"
High fives,

Sasha Says, ep. 20
Sasha introduced me to one of her friends using their teacher's nickname for the kid, "Clofish" (rhymes with blowfish) instead of her actual name, which is Chloe
"Let's be vampires. And spies."
"Princesses are my worst enemy!"
"Parents always say yes to playdates."
"There are a lot of nutcases here!" (It turns out she was referring to a helmet brand that lots of people were wearing on the group bike ride for kids)
"I'm feeling very unpatient."
"There are two kinds of petrified. One is like petrified wood, and the other is like in Harry Potter." (Characters in Harry Potter #2 are immobilized by a marauding basilisk)

Sasha Says, ep. 19
on fashion: "You dress very... arty. Like Nicki [Minaj] but not so crazy."
on femininity: "I'm not really a 'girl' girl."
on modesty: "Sometimes I feel kinda sorry for animals because they can't cover their privates."
on whether she plans to attend college: "I will just go for lunch and recess."
after I'd spent an hour reading one of the scarier chapters of Harry Potter 3 aloud while Ezra and Sasha played around the play structure outside, Ezra picked up the book and Sasha says, "Don't look at that, Ezra! It will give you nightmares!"
"We used to have an ant farm in the bathroom. I don't know why; we don't eat in there."
"I'm a secret fairy. (I'm not really.)"
"My dad is a little..." she leans in and whispers like it's a naughty word: "...funky."

Sasha Says, ep. 18
Several minutes after finishing opening her four or five birthday presents: "Okay Mom, I'm feeling very excited now. Could you go wrap another present and bring it to me now?"
On what would happen if a person was struck by lightning: "They wouldn't die, they'd be okay. They'd just like have electricity in their lungs, and go to the hospital."
On the walk home from school we see a broken plastic cup, I suggest Sasha pick it up so we can recycle it when we get home. She picks it up with a flourish and says, "I'm Super Muscle Trash Girl!"
Less than a minute later we pass a tissue on the sidewalk, and I say "Go Super Muscle Trash Girl!"
Wearily, she says, "Sometimes I wish I wasn't Super Muscle Trash Girl," as she retrieves the tissue and puts it in the stroller.
As we approach her house and Sasha catches sight of the landscaping guy's truck: "It's my love! He has a gold tooth and a great mustache. Don't tell him anything!" He's a mid-40s Latino man with silver fillings on his front teeth.

Sasha Says, ep. 17
"Maybe you should go back to first grade. Because then you would be the biggest kid there!"
"I'm gonna have a LIMBO party for my birthday!"
In the middle of painting the play structure, she hops down and skips off, saying, "Dumbledore needs me!"
Sasha directs me to bury her feet in the gravel pile in the yard, encouraging me to pour more and more gravel on by saying, "Harder! Harder! Oh my god, harder!"
Whenever I ask any question that might be answered with "no" or "of course not," Sasha now prefers to say, in her best teenager voice, "Oh. Em. Gee. -- En. Oh." (translation: OMG NO)
Sasha: "My mom doesn't want me to go to college."
me: "Really?"
Sasha: "She wants me to stay home and be her little girl forever."
"Do you like pho? I do. I also really like... I don't remember what it's called. It's next to pho and you can put chicken and other things in it, but it's not liquid like a soup." Five minutes later: "Broth! I like broth!"
When I asked about a pile of computer chips and sticky notes that's been on the kitchen counter for a week: "Oh, that's my invention. I don't know what it does. I want it to serve drinks."
"What would happen if a kid ate alcohol?"
As we were writing a story about the Avengers:
me: "What power should the supervillain have?"
Sasha: "Oh! Squirting lemonade into people's eyes!"
me: "That would hurt! What would the villain's name be?"
Sasha: "Lemon Squirt!"
"What if your gums were attached and you couldn't open your mouth?"

Sasha Says, ep. 16
"My mom has a birthday really soon. It's this year. I have a birthday next year." (Sasha's birthday is next month)
"My mom is 30 right now. She's turning 41."
"There's a kid in my class who acts kinda weird, and I'm scared he will grow up and kill people."
"Murderers are not real."
"I tried wingardium leviosa [a levitating spell from Harry Potter] on my brother so he would hit his head on the ceiling, but it didn't work."
"Once, we had a kitten, but it jumped on my head so we had to throw it away." [Turns out she meant that it was too wild, so her family gave it away.]

Sasha Says, ep. 15
"My dad is pretty old. He's like, in his 40s or 70s." [Sasha's dad being "old" is something of a theme around here.]
"I don't want to ever grow up because I don't want to drive a stupid ol' car!"
"I feel really bad for my parents because they never get to watch movies, because they're so busy takin' care of Ezra an' me."
Upon seeing a National Geographic photograph of some sort of small mouse-like rodent with several fuzzy offspring: "Maybe that's Peter Pettigrew [a person who transforms into a rat in Harry Potter] with his babies!"
Upon seeing a roadkill squirrel on the walk home: "That's so gross and sad! Even sadder than if it was a squished person!"
"Abraham Lincoln stopped slavery."
"My dad is a grumpy old man. He's always grumpy. Like actually all the time. Except when you're here."

Sasha Says, ep. 14
Anytime something doesn't go her way: "Aw, shoots!"
Sasha: "I wish Abe was alive."
me: "Who's Abe?"
Sasha: "Abraham Lincoln, of course!"
me: "Oh! Why do you wish Abraham Lincoln was still alive?"
Sasha: "So he could see that we don't have slavery anymore!"
Sasha still says her K sound as a T sound. She used to have a cat they called Kitty Bitty. She pronounces it "Titty Bitty" and I have to try not to snort with laughter every time the name comes up.
After haltingly sounding out the word "shirt": "I knew it was 'shirt' because 'shit' isn't a real word."
Sasha: "Have you seen the movie with the guy with the big mustache?"
me: "I'm not sure. Tell me more about it."
Sasha: "He's like, the guardian of the trees."
me: "Hmm..."
Sahsa: "He's all orange."
me: "Oh! The Lorax!"
"Some kids think their parents weren't ever kids, but I'm smarter than that."

Sasha Says, ep. 13
"We should ask God to make it snow. But I don't believe in it. I just believe in Christmas."
"I think the boxcutter is in the tillery room. I don't know why it's called a tillery room." She means the utility room.
Regarding the dog, who is at least part Chihuahua: "She was born in Mexican." (She's from the shelter, so her actual origins are unknown.)
Me: "Did you have fun with your Grandma during her visit?"
Sasha: "Kinda. Well, she always does a lot of stuff with me so I get like tired of her after just one minute."
"My dad is really old. Like probably 80 or 100." (He's probably in his 40s by my estimation.)
"My dad loves Miyazaki movies." (Sasha leans in and whispers) "I think my dad has a crush on him!"
Sasha wanted to "write the Harry Potter books, but with changes." (I tried to teach her the word "fanfiction" but I don't think it stuck.) So here's the text of Sasha's chapter one, which she dictated to me and I dutifully transcribed:
"Voldemort attacked the baby! Oh no! Ahhh! Little baby Harry. He's sucking on his sucky thingamajinga. Ahhhh!"
Oh yes, there's an illustration to go with it (Voldemort is the ghost and everyone is apparently nude):

Sasha Says, ep. 12
Sasha: "What's that van for?"
me: "It says 'Heating and Cooling' on it. What do you think it's for?"
Sasha: "I think it delivers heating pads."
Sasha: "You left the kitchen light on!"
me: "Your mom had it on this morning and I never turned it off, so it's been on all day."
Sasha: "I would not like to be that light."
Walking home from school during a sunbreak after days of clouds and rain: "My eyes feel kinda weird, because they haven't had the sun in them for so long!"
Regarding a Cinderella toy: "That is not Cinderella. I hate Cinderella. Cinderella is my worst emily -- eminy -- eninny -- elimy -- em -- en -- enemy."
During imaginative play, Sasha has started narrating in a way that mimics novels. Rather than just having the dolls, animals, or toys speak their lines, Sasha will follow their dialogue with "said so-and-so." (It's usually variations on Harry Potter characters and scenes.) So her playing sounds like this: "'Come on Harry, get in the car, we're leaving,' said Mr. Dursely. 'Where are we going?' asked Harry. 'I said no questions!' Mr. Dursely yelled."

Sasha Says, ep. 11
"My ears haven't been alive very long."
On our walk home from school in a stiff wind, Sasha commented on the debris scattered around the neighborhood from overturned recycling bins and summed it up with: "It's a messy day!"
Two days later, referring to the tree detritus blown everywhere by the recent wind storm: "It's all dirty!"
"The Sirius Black Lego sticker is my favorite because I have a crush on Sirius Black." (Keep in mind this kid hasn't seen the movies, just heard the first three books read aloud.)
As the family dog (a small Chihuahua mix) jumps all over Sasha upon our arrival home: "I wish I had odor on my body so I could spray the dog and protect myself."
"I want a turtle, and so my dad said I can babysit his friend's turtle for one week and if I show that I have responsibility, then I can have a turtle. So I'll be really responsible for one week and then not after that."
As the baby emits several of his usual grunts: "Ezra has a frog in his throat. He is very digestible."

referring to a Bratz coloring book: "I can't look at this too long. It's scary. It will give me nightmares."
Sasha, demonstrating a tenuous grasp of major characters, themes, and plot of the Harry Potter books:
Sasha: "Wanna know who's on my top good list? Dumbledore."
me: "What list is Snape on?"
Sasha: "My bad list. And so is that teacher I hate... Trelawney."
me: "What about Dobby?"
Sasha: "Sorta in between my good list and bad list."
me: "And Voldemort?"
Sasha: "He's in between too. Because he was friends or something with Sirius Black and he's on my good list so Voldemort's not totally bad."
"I always see my mom's -- [whispers] boobs." [I assume she's talking about breastfeeding.]
A block from Sasha's house: "Is that your house?"
One of my favorite things is that Sasha doesn't have all of her letter sounds down quite yet. She still says the "T" sound in place of the "K" sound, and a "D" sound for a "G" sound. So one of the things I love to hear her say is Professor McGonagall's name, which sounds like this:
"Mitt Donadall"

Referring to her newly-pierced, currently infected earlobes: "My ears are affected."
"The guy who mows our grass is Haspanish. Wanna know his secret?" She leans in conspiratorially and whispers: "He's cute."
Out of absolutely nowhere: "YMCA: Crazy."

A week after the election: "I voted for Obama. All the kids vote for Obama."
"Do you know Barack Obama's real name? Barack. And do you know Mitt Romney's real name? Mitt."
Flexing her itty bitty biceps: "I'm so strong the Mandrakes can't kill me!" [in Harry Potter, Mandrakes are plants that, when immature, can knock out a human with their cries, and when fully grown their cries are so horrible they can actually kill humans.]
I texted Sasha's mom a picture of the activity we were working on, and she texted back saying "Tell Sasha I say HI!" When I relayed this to Sasha, she rolled her eyes and said in her most dramatic teenager voice, "Boring." I laughed and started to type a text, and, panicked, Sasha said, "Don't tell her I said that! It's unpolite!"
Me: "It's chilly out here!"
Sasha: "It's okay, we have strength!"
Me: "I missed the goal! Alas!"
Sasha: "Alas, you swabs!"
Me: "Huh?"

Referring to her dad's crooked teeth: "You know how my dad's teeth are all piled up?"
Talking about her dog: "She had the fleas."
Flexing her biceps: "I like exercising because it makes me tough!"
"There's something fishy around here."
On the walk home from school, pulling up her shirt to show me what resembles a magenta child-sized sports bra: "I'm wearin' my joggin' clothes because it makes me really fast! Because it makes it so I can't sweat so I'm fast."
We had been having a verbal tug-of-war about something or other, and she decided the best way to win the argument would be: "Yeah, well, my dad is famous." (He's not.) I replied, "That's what Draco Malfoy says." She looked at me in genuine horror and backpedaled: "Actually, my dad's not famous."

Sasha Says, ep. 6
For the past 10 minutes Sasha had been pretending to be a cat, and as I petted her and gave her imaginary kitty food I recited a few cat facts. She abruptly stopped pretending to be a cat, and said in this very annoyed voice, "Please stop talking about cats."
Me: "Are you excited to go trick-or-treating on Halloween?"
Sasha, adamant: "NO."
As I sing the chorus to "This is Halloween" from Nightmare Before Christmas: "I know that exactly same song!"
"You know what? All food is from the store. But some of it is from farms, and some of it is made in factories. So you can go to the farm to get foods from the grocery store and factories."
"Santa Claus has the same initials as me. If Santa Claus had initials. I don't think he does."
"I know how that song goes. But don't trust me."
"Books are like movies, except books the screen is in your head. I think I like real screens better."
"At the morning meeting our principal did a dance. He was really bad at it. It looked like a cowboy wearing a tie, which is very unlikely."
Hugs,

Sasha Says, ep. 5
On weeds: "If you're nice to them, they'll be nice to you."
After watching the debates with her parents, who reportedly didn't really talk about their views with her: "I like Obama but I don't like Governor Mitt Romney. He seems greedy. I'm voting for Obama."
"Guess who my favorite character in Totoro is? Miyazaki." [Miyazaki is the art director, which she knows]
Referring to slugs: "They're stretched out so they're thinnyer."
Sasha: "Can I watch a movie? You said I could watch a movie when we got home."
Me: "I really don't remember saying you could watch a movie."
Sasha: "Trust me, you did. I'm a kid, so I have a better rememberer than you."
"Pumpkins are fruits because they grow on a vine. All things that grow on vines are fruits. Take my word for it. If you want to. You can decide if you want to take my word for it."
"Spiderman got bited by a spider that had chemicals in it, and then he started cobbing web."
"Know why I want to watch Rugrats? Because it reminds me of my boyfriend. Because it has love in it."
Later in the conversation: "I love Q, that's why he's my boyfriend. But he doesn't like me because he's afraid I might kiss him. So I'm not his girlfriend."

Sasha Says, ep. 4
"If my mom was a horse she would have shorter hair."
Singing me a song she composed (clearly on the spot): "I don't have any rights to get what I want, but I have needs, needs, needs."
"Do you know why I like Word Girl so much? Because I am Word Girl. But don't tell my parents."
"Ezra has laughing skill. And pooping skill."
Referring to the playbill/program brochure from a recent children's theatre show: "I got autographs on the flipper!"
Listening to an orchestral piece on the Classical music station: "This reminds me of country music."
Apropos of nothing: "You know what? Ezra was homeborn, but I was born in a birth center."
"When I grow up, I don't want to own a car. Cars are not as good for the environment." [context: Sasha and I have talked about how I choose not to own a car, and that I bike and bus everywhere.]
